What is PAT testing and why do it?

PAT stands for Portable Appliance Testing. Simply put a PAT test is a series of checks to ensure that any item with a plug is safe to use. This involves visual checks for damage or wear that might make an item potentially unsafe; and will also include a test on a specialised piece of PAT testing equipment to check that the circuit inside is in safe working order.

While there is no law on having items PAT tested, there is a duty of care to employees or the public, under which electrical items must be safe to use. Insurers will often require that items are regularly PAT tested(check your small print!). Failure to do so might be enough for insurers to refuse a payout in the unfortunate event of an accident involving electrical items.
